What SiMoPic.com is: An alternative similar movie search database

Have you ever heard of the concept of "information filtering"? Are you aware of the fact that you do this every day, most likely hundreds of times? It's pretty simple: You digest information that is important to you, and you forget all the rest. And there is a lot of information to filter...

In the age of internet, mobile phones and constant communication, it's difficult not to be overwhelmed by this flood of information. Among many other things, the same applies for entertainment: Music and bands, books and stories or movies and TV series.

Did you know, that the International Movie Database (www.imdb.com) lists almost 2.5 million TV and movie titles? It would take a lifetime, without breaks, to watch all of this material only once!

So, how do you efficiently select movies, without selecting the ones that just seem boring and neverending after 10 minutes? Usually, we prefer mouth to mouth propaganda: If a friend thinks a movie is great, it is quite likely that we like it too. However, some friends are better at this than others.
Of course, one always has the possibility to rely on algorithm-based recommondations many databases offer: "People who liked this also like...". But seriously, how "similar" are movies like Inception and Catch Me If You Can, except for the fact that they are starring the same actor? Just because Hannibal Lector sizzles like a snake in Silence of the Lambs, there is no similarity to Snakes on a Plane.

The point being, despite the usefulness of such algorithms, they will never have the capability to differentiate as sophisticated as a human mind: Emotions, story, actors, aeesthetics and the sound might influence wether we like and relate to a movie or not. It also affects our sensation of a movie beeing similar to another, much more than just the comparison of two tags...

We try to build up a database of relations between different movies based on entirely human judgement and therefore provide an alternative to thousands of computer based recommendations. We hope you find this usefull...and you find the movies you really like.
